Part of the Rio Grande Valley, Padre Island is the world's longest barrier island along the Texas Gulf coast. The whole island is about 130 miles long, oriented north-sought with the Gulf of Mexico, and Laguna Madre on the west.

In the north, Padre Island stretches from Corpus Christi, connecting to Mustang Island and running to the town of Port Isabel and South Padre in the southern end, that separates the island from Brazos Santiago Pass and Brazos Island.

South Padre is literally a town on the island, but also a term in reference to one of the two separated portions of South Padre, dividend in 1964 by the artificial Port Mansfield Channel, connecting to a small retirement village of Port Mansfield, a nationwide famous fishing spot.

Warm gulf waters are the scenery for great boating and fishing at South Padre Island, although there are many other attractions, such as surfing, sailing, bird watching, fine dinning or even shopping.

Although windsurfing and parasailing are the most popular sports on the island, many people enjoy the jet skis, hobie cats and wave-runners available for rental. Otherwise, visitors can discover one of the newest attractions in South Padre Island: the Schlitterbahn Beach Water Park, or visiting Isla Blanca Park.

Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark is located at the very tip of Texas on South Padre Island overlooking the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, providing a tropical resort setting, including cruising the endless Rio Aventura, exploring a giant sandcastle or enjoying the white sandy beaches of this region.

In South Padre Island there are several local nudist resorts, although most of them encourage family values with a positive body image. Weddings at South Padre is another popular option, including amazing beach wedding sand sculptures, that may transform the ceremony into the stage of anyone's dreams, with miles and miles of pristine white sand and dunes.

Taking a short trolley ride, travelers can visit shops and museums located in the historic Port Isabel or charter boat docks in Port Mansfield, where there are numerous fishing piers. Although South Padre is considered a resort destination, the island has a considerable number of permanent residents.

As of the census in 1990 South Padre Island had 109 businesses and a population of 1,677, growing after the 2000 Census to 2,422 permanent inhabitants, with the number of business increased considerably.
